Malta already rewards its holders. Six listed companies, six ways to check who holds.
Holder benefits are not only a Japanese habit. On the Malta Stock Exchange, a small market, six listed companies run a standing scheme for the people who hold their shares: a grocery chain, the main telecom group, a hotel group, a brewer, a household goods distributor and an insurer. Each scheme pays in the company's own products. Each also checks eligibility its own way, by email, post, card or app.

listed companies with a standing holder benefit scheme
typical discount, paid in the company's own products and services
different ways of proving a holding, from emailed statements to postal cards
Every scheme pays in what the company already sells.
Groceries, mobile plans, hotel nights, drinks, household goods and insurance cover. The pattern is the one Japan proved at scale: a benefit that costs the company its margin, not its list price, and brings holders back as customers.

The benefit is simple. Knowing who holds is not.
Each company had to invent its own way to check eligibility. Holders email statements, wait for a card in the post, or pick an option in a third-party app. Holders who sell are often asked to tell the company themselves.
- 01Manual onboardingThe grocery scheme activates a holder after an email with proof of holding. The hotel group and the household goods distributor issue physical cards.
- 02Holders tell the company when they sellThe grocery scheme asks holders to email when they no longer hold; the hotel card ends when the holding falls below 1,000 shares.
- 03Brokers in the middleSeveral schemes accept holdings through an authorised intermediary, which means a statement has to travel from the broker to the company.
- 04No shared railSix schemes, six onboarding flows, no common pass. A holder of three of these companies proves the same thing three times.
A small market that already proves the model.
Own products, real discounts
Every Maltese scheme pays in the company's own products or services, the design that makes Japanese programs last.
Every consumer sector
Retail, telecoms, hospitality, drinks, household goods and insurance: the sectors that lead in Japan lead here too.
Size counts, time does not yet
Tiers follow the number of shares held. None of the six rewards time held, the lever Japanese issuers increasingly use.
Checked by hand
Emails, postal cards and app dropdowns. Eligibility is confirmed once and rarely rechecked.
No pass across issuers
Each scheme stands alone. One verified holder pass across all six would be a first.
Verified holders, one rail
Yutai lets listed companies recognise and reward verified holders wherever their shares are held, so a scheme like these runs without emails, cards or manual checks.

Holder benefit programs are voluntary marketing programs set by issuers or venues. They are not shareholder rights, carry no cash value, and are not dividends or investment returns. Their legal and tax treatment differs by country and by holder. Issuers and venues should take their own legal and tax advice before launching or promoting a program, and holders should check how benefits are taxed where they live.
