Three companies filed benefit changes on September 29. The largest of them, ITO EN, is ending its program. A smaller Prime company, TAKE and GIVE NEEDS, is starting one.
Shareholder benefits, known in Japan as kabunushi yutai (株主優待), are voluntary perks that listed companies give their holders, usually products, vouchers or discounts on the company's own services. They are set by each company's board and are separate from dividends.

The filings
ITO EN
TSE Prime · 2593 · Green tea and soft drinks · Filed September 29
ITO EN gave holders of 100 shares or more a set of its own products, worth about ¥1,500 or ¥3,000 depending on holdings, plus a discount coupon for its mail-order health products. The benefit applied to both its common and its listed preferred shares. The company is abolishing the program, and the April 2026 cycle was the last. It said it wants to return profits to shareholders fairly and put resources into dividends and long-term growth. Its dividend forecast is unchanged.
TAKE and GIVE NEEDS
TSE Prime · 4331 · Wedding venues and services · Filed September 29
TAKE and GIVE NEEDS is introducing a shareholder benefit for the first time, from the December 2026 cycle. Holders of 700 shares or more receive points in an external benefit club, from 5,000 points at 700 shares to 90,000 at 3,000 shares or more. Points can be exchanged for more than 5,000 items. Holders who stay on the register for two consecutive years can carry points over once. The company also issued an English version of the notice.
GiG Works
TSE Standard · 2375 · Gig-work and IT field staffing platform · Filed September 29
GiG Works gave holders of 1,000 shares or more a ¥3,000 digital gift. From the October 2026 cycle they can choose instead between that digital gift, a ¥1,000 children's gift voucher with a snack set, or a hydroponic vegetable set from the company's own farm worth about ¥3,000. The discount coupon for holders of 100 shares or more is unchanged. The company cited thanking shareholders and encouraging medium- to long-term holding.
Context
ITO EN's decision fits a trend among large consumer brands. A product gift is natural for a tea company, but it reaches only holders who are registered in Japan, and companies increasingly describe it as unfair to holders who cannot use it, including overseas and institutional holders. "Fair returns to shareholders" is the standard wording for that concern.
New programs keep appearing at the same time. TAKE and GIVE NEEDS chose an outsourced points club rather than a product of its own, and GiG Works added gift choices that include produce from its own farm.
Yutai's view
ITO EN's reasoning is valid, and the problem it describes is how benefits are delivered, not whether to offer them. A product gift that only domestic holders can receive is hard to defend as the holder base becomes more international. If every verified holder could receive a benefit wherever the shares sit, a brand like ITO EN would have one less reason to give up a direct link with its holders.
