Two Japanese listed companies introduced shareholder benefit programs on October 27. One rewards every qualifying holder and pays more for longer tenure. The other gives a prize to a limited number of holders drawn by lottery.
Shareholder benefits, known in Japan as kabunushi yutai (株主優待), are voluntary perks that listed companies give their holders, usually products, vouchers or discounts on the company's own services. They are set by each company's board and are separate from dividends.

The filings
Hokko Chemical Industry
TSE Standard · 4992 · Agrochemicals and fine chemicals · Filed October 27
Hokko Chemical Industry is introducing a shareholder benefit for the first time: a QUO card, a prepaid card widely used in Japan, given once a year from the November 2026 cycle. Holders of 100 shares or more qualify once they have held for at least a year. The card is worth ¥500, ¥1,000 or ¥2,000 at 100, 300 and 500 shares, and ¥1,000, ¥2,000 or ¥3,000 for holders of two years or more. The company measures tenure by how many consecutive times the same holder number appears on its May and November registers: three for one year, five for two years. Cards are mailed with the AGM notice in early February. The company announced a higher dividend forecast the same day.
THE WHY HOW DO COMPANY
TSE Standard · 3823 · Digital services and precious metals · Filed October 27
THE WHY HOW DO COMPANY is introducing a benefit built on gold items from Japan Pure Gold Bank, a subsidiary that began precious metals trading in April 2026. From the January 2027 cycle, each holder of 3,000 shares or more is entered once in a draw, with no application needed. There are 1,103 prizes: a 30g gold koban, two 10g koban, 100 one-gram gold grains and 1,000 small gold logo pieces, about ¥16 million in total at the subsidiary's list prices. The company notes the items are processed products, so their value differs from the bullion price. Winners learn the result when the prize arrives by registered mail, by the end of April 2027. All holders on the January 2027 register, whatever their holding, may also purchase the same four items at 5% off in March 2027. The company had said on October 7 that it was considering the program.
Context
Hokko Chemical Industry follows a pattern seen in earlier posts: a new program with a minimum holding period and a higher tier for longer holders. Its method of counting tenure is common in Japan. The company checks its register twice a year and counts consecutive appearances under the same holder number.
Lottery benefits are less common. Most programs give every qualifying holder the same benefit. A draw lets a company offer larger prizes within a fixed budget, but most eligible holders receive nothing. THE WHY HOW DO COMPANY also uses the program to present the products of a business it entered this year.
Yutai's view
Both programs depend on the domestic register. Tenure is counted from register snapshots, and prizes go by mail to the address on file. That works for holders in Japan. It leaves out holders who keep shares through an international broker or in tokenized form. We think holding periods and benefits should be verifiable wherever the shares are held, so that the same program can reach every holder.
