Research note · United Kingdom

Britain's brands reward their holders. The largest perks market outside Japan, still claimed by post.

More than 20 UK listed companies give their holders a perk: a voucher at Next, a free breakfast at Premier Inn, a discount at Mulberry, food vouchers at Marston's and Mitchells & Butlers pubs. The programs are simple. Claiming them is not: it depends on whether the shares sit on the company's register, with a broker, or in a pension.

How holders claim

The perk depends on where the shares sit.

Most UK private holders own their shares through a broker or platform, in a nominee account. Their name is not on the company's register, so the company cannot see them. Every program solves this differently.

What it tells us

The demand is proven. The plumbing is from another era.

01Design

Own products, real use

Every major UK perk is spent with the company: a shop at Next, a breakfast at Premier Inn, a meal at a pub.

02Sectors

Consumer-facing first

Fashion, hospitality and pubs dominate, as in Japan, where food and retail companies lead adoption.

03Friction

Paper, post and ID

Vouchers by post, physical cards at check-in, emails with photo ID in store. Each step loses holders.

04Reach

The nominee gap

Most private holders sit in nominee accounts. They must ask their broker every year, and some programs exclude them outright.

05Tenure

Size and dates, not time

Programs check a holding on one date. None of the major ones reward how long the shares have been held.

The patternYutai

Verified at the broker, delivered in the app

Yutai lets brokers and wallets confirm holdings to the issuer automatically, so every holder sees and claims the perk wherever the shares are held, with no letters and no requests.

Perk details come from the company pages and other sources cited and are reproduced in good faith; Yutai has not verified them with the companies. Terms, qualifying dates and validity change every year; check each company's current terms before relying on them.

Holder benefit programs are voluntary marketing programs set by issuers or venues. They are not shareholder rights, carry no cash value, and are not dividends or investment returns. Their legal and tax treatment differs by country and by holder. Issuers and venues should take their own legal and tax advice before launching or promoting a program, and holders should check how benefits are taxed where they live.
